Unpacking the Science Museum’s Relationship with Adani Green Energy: Tackling Climate Change Together?

Science Museum sponsor urges ‘armchair activists’ to step back

Greta Thunberg led a protest at the Science Museum last month, where the group unfurled a banner with a message that read: “2024, more droughts and floods – fuelled by Science Museum oil and gas sponsors”. The Fossil Free Science Museum coalition, comprised of Extinction Rebellion and Scientists for Extinction Rebellion, raised concerns about the museum’s reputation being tarnished by its oil and gas sponsors.

Despite criticism from some activists, Sir Ian Blatchford, the director and chief executive of the Science Museum Group, defended the museum’s decision to accept sponsorship from Adani Green Energy. He emphasized the importance of engaging audiences with the science of climate change, which he described as one of the defining challenges of our time. Blatchford stated that the trustees believe in maintaining relationships with companies like Adani Green Energy in order to promote efforts to make the global economy less carbon intensive.

The new gallery at the Science Museum was made possible through sponsorship from Adani Green Energy. While some have criticized this partnership, Blatchford is committed to addressing climate change and educating the public on this critical issue. The museum believes it is important to continue working with industry leaders in order to find innovative solutions to mitigate the impact of climate change on our planet.
