Uniting for Soccer: The Global Celebration of the World’s Most Popular Sport

May 25th Declared as the Official Day for Soccer Fans to Celebrate the World’s Most Popular Sport

World Football Day is now an annual celebration of soccer, the world’s most popular sport. This day, held on May 25th each year, marks the 100th anniversary of the first international soccer tournament in history, which took place during the 1924 summer Olympic games in Paris. The resolution to establish this day was adopted by the 193-member General Assembly of the United Nations with overwhelming support from over 160 countries.

The significance of soccer as a global game that transcends national, cultural, and socio-economic boundaries was highlighted by Libya’s U.N. Ambassador in introducing the resolution. Beyond being a recreational activity, soccer serves as a universal language that promotes mutual understanding, tolerance, respect, and solidarity among people worldwide.

FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, and regional and national soccer federations play a crucial role in promoting the game. The resolution encourages all nations, U.N. bodies, international organizations, academia, civil society, and private sector to observe World Football Day and raise awareness about the benefits of soccer for all through educational and public engagement activities.
