UCSF Health: Leading the Way in Inclusive Care for LGBTQ+ Patients and Visitors

UCSF Health Recognized as LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader for 2024

UCSF Health has been recognized as a Healthcare Equality Leader by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. This award acknowledges their commitment to inclusive care for LGBTQ+ patients, visitors, and employees. UCSF has received this recognition every year since the HEI was first developed in 2007.

President and CEO Suresh Gunasekaran emphasized the importance of serving all patients and families, especially those who face health disparities due to factors such as sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. UCSF Health has a long history of advocating for LGBTQ+ individuals and providing training to optimize care for this community.

Over the years, UCSF has established various initiatives such as creating an LGBTQ+ center, hosting the first LGBTQIA Health Forum for students in the health professions, and securing gender-affirming health care coverage for all University of California students and employees. The Healthcare Equality Index evaluates facilities based on more than 60 criteria related to LGBTQ+ patient-centered care. These include staff training, patient services and support, employee benefits, discrimination protections, and a public commitment to equality. Facilities that receive Equality Leader status have demonstrated that they meet most of these criteria and are transparent about their commitment to non-discrimination.
