Kamala Harris, Vice President, celebrates women’s sports in Andscape.

In March, Vice President Kamala Harris hosted a Women’s History Month celebration at her Washington residence alongside the Women’s Sports Foundation, founded by tennis icon Billie Jean King. The event brought together an impressive group of women to honor the theme of trailblazing females in sports.

Among the attendees were Nikki Fargas, president of the Las Vegas Aces, Renee Montgomery, retired WNBA player and part owner of the Atlanta Dream, and Lisa Leslie, a three-time WNBA MVP and four-time Olympic gold medalist. These women praised the trailblazing women in sports during their speeches.

Vice President Harris emphasized the importance of daily work done by these women to benefit people of all genders during her remarks. The atmosphere in her residence was transformed into a space for celebration, reflection, and recognition of women’s crucial role in shaping sports history.

Harris also highlighted the significance of providing equitable access to opportunities in sports. She shared her mother’s advice about being first and paving the way for others while emphasizing self-empowerment and standing up for oneself.

As part of her efforts to support female athletes, Harris has made surprise visits to young female athletes across the country. She visited coach Dawn Staley and the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team in January 2021 and recently surprised St. Paul Central High School softball team along with other guests invited to the Women’s History Month reception.
