Thunderstorms Trigger Unprecedented Spike in Asthma-Related Hospital Admissions in Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire West

During thunderstorms, asthmatics are advised by the NHS to take precautions in order to prevent their condition from worsening. In June 2023, there was an increase in asthma-related hospital admissions during stormy weather in Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire West Integrated Care Board (BOB ICB). The health body has warned that thunderstorms can carry small particles of pollen deep into people’s lungs, leading to respiratory issues.

In the same month, “thunderstorm asthma” affected 133 people in Berkshire West, Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire compared to 62 and 72 in May and July of the same year. Weather changes, pollen, air pollution, and thunderstorms can trigger breathlessness, wheezing, and coughing, putting those with hay fever at risk as well. To prevent asthma attacks and reduce hospital visits, BOB ICB has provided guidance that includes using preventer inhalers regularly, staying indoors with windows closed during storms, wearing a mask when outside to reduce pollen exposure, monitoring weather alerts for high pollen levels and carrying a reliever inhaler.

Prof Tim Hinks, honorary consultant at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust explained how unpredictable it is why some thunderstorms trigger asthma attacks while others do not. He emphasized the importance of taking precautions as severe and potentially fatal attacks can occur during these events even in individuals with “mild” asthma. By following the advice given by healthcare professionals there is hope that pressure on local hospitals will be alleviated and unnecessary emergency visits can be prevented.
