Record-breaking performances and heartbreaking losses: Caitlin Clark’s emotional rollercoaster in the NCAA tournament

Caitlin Clark Breaks Women’s Scoring Record in Single Season as Iowa Advances to Sweet 16

Caitlin Clark, the top-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes, faced a tough challenge from the eighth-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers in the second round of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament on Monday night in Iowa City. Despite setting a new scoring record in her final collegiate home game, Clark struggled to keep up with the Mountaineers and ultimately fell short in a 54-64 loss.

As a WNBA-bound player, Clark’s performance in the game brought her career points total to 3,830. In the fourth quarter, West Virginia tied the game after going on a 10-0 run but the Hawkeyes responded with a 12-2 run to secure their victory. Clark also set a new NCAA Division I women’s record for most points scored in a single season with 1,113, surpassing the previous record set by Washington’s Kelsey Plum in 2016-17.

After hosting the first and second-round tournament games, Iowa’s NCAA tournament road now goes through Albany, New York. This means that Clark has played her final collegiate game at Carver Arena and will soon move on to pursue her professional basketball career with the WNBA. Following the game, Clark expressed gratitude and pride for her time at Iowa and thanked her teammates for their support throughout her journey. She also highlighted how important it was for them to use their home crowd as motivation during difficult moments in the game and praised their resilience as they fought hard until the end.

Next up for Iowa is a Sweet 16 matchup against fifth-seeded Colorado on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The two teams met last year during this same round of tournament play when Colorado won handily over Iowa by double digits. With both teams looking strong heading into this rematch, it will be interesting to see who emerges victorious and advances to face off against another talented team in regional playoffs.
