Plano ISD Shines at Texas Science and Engineering Fair

In College Station, Texas, Plano Independent School District (ISD) students showcased their exceptional talents at the Texas Science and Engineering Fair (TXSEF) from March 22-23, 2024. A total of 1,200 students competed across various scientific categories, and among them were 13 outstanding Plano ISD students who earned a staggering 23 awards and distinctions.

Prisha Bhat from Plano East Senior High School won the prestigious ‘Best in the State of Texas’ award in life science for her innovative project on aqua-arsenic remediation. Her research focused on enhancing plant tolerance to drought and arsenic contamination through groundbreaking methods.

Beyond Bhat’s achievement, nine senior division students from Plano ISD secured top positions in their respective categories and were recognized as Governor’s Science and Technology Champions Academy nominees. In addition to this, one junior division student placed first in their category and has been invited to apply for the Thermo Fisher Science Junior Innovators Challenge.

Two seniors from Plano ISD have also qualified for the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), alongside eight qualifiers from the Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair. They will present their projects on a global stage in Dallas, Texas, from May 12 to 17, 2024.

A number of special awards were presented at the fair to recognize exceptional projects. Hiruni Wansapura from Robinson Middle School received the ‘Engineers of Tomorrow Award’ for her work in environmental engineering, while Andy Qin from Plano West Senior High School received the Samsung Award for his project in systems software.

In another remarkable achievement, Faizan Zaki from Rice Middle School in Plano ISD clinched the Dallas Regional Spelling Bee title for the third time with his winning word “kurgan.” This victory has earned him a spot at the National Scripps Spelling Bee where he will represent his school and district from May 28 to May 30, 2024.
