New York’s Judge Juan Merchan Gags Former President Trump in Manhattan Hush-Money Trial for Stormy Daniels to Maintain Order and Fairness

Former Prosecutor Commends New York Judge’s Strict Enforcement of Gag Order Against Trump

In Manhattan, former President Donald Trump is facing a criminal trial for hush-money payments made to Stormy Daniels. To prevent any interference with the case, Judge Juan Merchan has issued a gag order that prohibits Trump from making public statements about jurors, potential witnesses, and D.A.’s staff members except for Alvin Bragg, court staff, and family members of any staff or counsel if such statements are intended to interfere with the trial.

The gag order was issued on the same day that Trump criticized the judge and his daughter on Truth Social. However, the motion for the gag order was filed weeks before his online remarks. The judge reprimanded Trump’s legal team for allegations of prosecutorial misconduct and set a trial date of April 15.

Observers note that Judge Merchan is taking this case seriously and is committed to ensuring a fair and orderly legal process in the voter deception trial involving the former president. Former U.S. Attorney Harry Litman observed that the significant gag order imposed on Trump demonstrates Merchan’s readiness to enforce it if Trump violates it, especially after a jury is selected.
