New NFL Rule Changes: 15-Yard Penalties for Hip-Drop Tackles Approved, but Opposed by NFL Players Union

NFL owners approve proposal to penalize hip-drop tackles

The NFL announced on Monday that a new rule change has been approved at the league meetings, which will result in a 15-yard penalty for hip-drop tackles during games. This measure was met with strong support among teams, with the NFL stating that hip-drop tackles lead to significantly more injuries compared to other types of tackles, with a rate of 20-25 times higher.

However, the NFL Players Association opposed the proposal, labeling it as a rule change that would cause confusion for players, coaches, and others involved in the sport. Despite this opposition, the decision has been made and everyone will now have to adjust to the enforcement of the rule during the upcoming 2024 season.
