The mayor of Uvalde, Texas, Cody Smith, announced his resignation on Monday due to health concerns. Smith had won the 2023 election in a contentious race that was heavily influenced by the tragic Robb Elementary School shooting.

In his resignation statement, Smith expressed his gratitude towards the Uvalde community for their support and prayers during his recovery from unexpected medical issues that arose in recent weeks. His departure comes after a federal report found fault with the local response to the shooting, attributing the failures to poor organization and a confusing chain of command.

Shortly before Mayor Smith’s resignation, Uvalde Police Chief Daniel Rodriguez also stepped down on March 12. This move followed the release of a city-commissioned report that cleared the local police of any fault in their response to the school shooting. However, families of the victims were distraught by the city’s report, which sometimes praised the local law enforcement response.
