Join the Citizen Science Movement: Signs of the Seasons Launches In-person Workshops and Webinars

Citizen Science Trainings to Be Hosted by Extension and Sea Grant

A series of in-person workshops is set to begin for individuals interested in participating in the Signs of the Seasons citizen science project. The first training session will take place on Thursday, April 4th from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Stimpson’s Point in Brunswick. Additional workshops will be held throughout April and May in Falmouth, Wells, Augusta, Camden, and Boothbay. A full schedule of workshops can be found on the Signs of the Seasons webpage.

Those unable to attend in person can participate in a 3-part webinar series that covers the same material as the workshops. The workshops are free to attend but require registration on the program website. For more information or to request reasonable accommodation, contact Keri Kaczor at keri.kaczor@maine.edu or Beth Bisson at beth.bisson@maine.edu. Additional contact information can be found at 207-974-9502.

During these workshops, participants will learn how to make scientific observations of phenology, which is the study of cyclic and seasonal changes in plants and animals. They will practice making observations and leave with tools and knowledge necessary to set up their own observation site to record changes in phenology. Signs of the Seasons aims to recruit volunteers who will identify and record changes in over 20 different indicator species including rockweed, milkweed, loons butterflies lilacs among others
