Grapefruit: The Superfood Packed with Health Benefits and Cancer-Fighting Properties

Consuming grapefruit may help reduce cancer risk

Grapefruit, a citrus fruit widely consumed for its tangy flavor, has been found to have numerous health benefits. Recent studies have shown that grapefruit contains antioxidants, lycopene, and vitamin C, which can help reduce the risk of various types of cancer such as lung, breast, stomach, and prostate cancer.

A 2016 analysis by the Birla Institute of Technology in India found that citrus fruits like grapefruit and oranges contain flavonoids that have anti-inflammatory and supportive effects. These flavonoids can help prevent mutations and regulate cell function, reducing the risk of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and atherosclerosis.

Additionally, a 2015 meta-analysis by Wuhan University in China involving over 560,000 participants and 26 studies revealed that pink and red grapefruit contain lycopene, an antioxidant that may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Higher blood lycopene levels have been associated with lower rates of prostate cancer as lycopene can prevent new blood vessel formation in tumors and regulate vascular endothelial growth factor.

Moreover, a 2021 study by Roseman University of Health Sciences in the USA found that a compound in grapefruit juice called furanocoumarin bergamottin can inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells. This compound reduces prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels and activates apoptosis in prostate cancer cells slowing down disease progression. Apoptosis is the process of programmed cell death in the body.
