From Worms to Nonfiction: Expert Science Author and Educator Teaches Glenmont Elementary School Students the Importance of Research in Writing

Visit from Science Author and Educator at Glenmont

Last week, students at Glenmont Elementary School were thrilled to have science author and educator Dr. Jodi Wheeler-Toppen visit for two presentations. The younger students (K-2) learned about worm anatomy and the importance of revision in writing, while the older students (3-5) focused on the research involved in nonfiction writing.

Dr. Wheeler-Toppen used examples from her book, Dog and Cat Science Unleashed!, to guide the students through a research cycle strategy that could be applied to their own information searches. This interactive session inspired the older students to see research as a fun and essential part of the writing process.

The event was made possible thanks to Dr. Jodi Wheeler-Toppen, Glenmont Library Media Specialist Angela Datri, and the Glenmont PTA. The students and staff at Glenmont Elementary School were grateful for the opportunity to learn from an expert in science education and writing.
