Eastern Finland’s Resilience in the Face of Crisis: Navigating Challenges and Finding Growth Opportunities

The EU’s assistance is crucial for Eastern Finland

Eastern Finland has been hit hard by the Russian war of aggression, especially with the complete closure of the Russian border affecting its economy. Despite this, the region’s companies remain filled with desire and faith for growth. However, a realistic approach is necessary given the difficult financial situation of Finland. The Finnish Confederation of Business and Industry (EK) has proposed a list of recommendations to revive the economy and vitality of Eastern Finland.

Chairman Harry Broman emphasizes the seriousness of the situation in Eastern Finland and calls for cooperation between public authorities and business organizations to enable the region to thrive. One recommendation is to designate Eastern Finland as a special economic zone to accelerate business activities and create a healthy, growing economy that contributes to national GDP.

Other recommendations include improving air connections, increasing investments in tourism, implementing a broadband program, providing support for companies experiencing growth, skills shortages or changes in ownership and calling on EU solidarity to support Russia’s neighboring countries facing significant challenges due to the crisis.

Despite strong determination and optimism among Eastern Finland’s companies, collaboration between public and private sectors is essential for driving growth and sustainability in the region. A realistic approach is necessary given financial constraints while maintaining viability both economically and security-wise.
