China’s Political Manipulation: Beijing’s Response to the Taiwan Earthquake Sparks Anger and Criticism

Taiwan criticizes China for accepting global concern over earthquake, calls action ‘shameless’

Beijing’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, expressed gratitude for the world’s concern about a powerful earthquake that hit Taiwan. However, China views Taiwan as part of its territory and often tries to speak for the island on the global stage, causing anger in Taipei as Taiwan is a separate democratic entity.

In response to the 7.2 earthquake in eastern Taiwan that resulted in the loss of 10 lives, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the U.N., Geng Shuang, mentioned the quake during a meeting about children’s rights, referring to Taiwan as “China’s Taiwan.” Despite expressing concern and offering aid for the damage caused by the quake, China’s actions were met with criticism from Taiwan’s foreign ministry.

Taiwan condemned China for its “shameless” behavior after its government expressed appreciation for messages of support and sympathy from governments and leaders around the world, including the United States, Taiwan’s key international ally. According to Taiwan’s foreign ministry, China’s use of the Taiwan earthquake for its own agenda demonstrates its lack of goodwill towards Taiwan.

Overall, Taiwan views China’s actions as a form of psychological warfare and has condemned it for trying to manipulate international perception of the situation. Despite these challenges, Taiwan continues to seek international support while maintaining diplomatic relationships on its own terms.
