Breaking Down the Barriers: The Inspiring Journey of Palak Raval-Nelson in Public Health

Palak Raval-Nelson is a seasoned public health professional with over 26 years of experience as a civil servant. She has been working at the Department of Public Health since 1996, where she currently serves as Deputy Health Commissioner, overseeing Environmental Health Services, Air Management Services, Public Health Laboratory, and the AIDS Activities Coordinating Office.

Raval-Nelson’s career in public health began as a public health sanitarian and has since progressed through various roles such as supervisor, manager, administrator, and director of Environmental Health Services. Her work at the Department of Public Health is not limited to her current position; she also serves as adjunct faculty at Drexel University’s School of Public Health and Temple University.

In her teaching roles, Raval-Nelson specializes in courses on environmental and occupational health, vulnerable populations and the environment. Her expertise has earned her recognition as an outstanding woman environmental professional by the Society of Women Environmental Professionals in 2006. Raval-Nelson’s contributions to public health have also been recognized through publications in the National Journal of Environmental Health and presentations at conferences such as NEHA, PPHA, and APHA.

Raval-Nelson holds degrees from Temple University (B.S. in Biology), MCP Hahnemann University (M.P.H.), and Drexel University (Ph.D. in environmental health and policy). She is a member of the Delta Omega National Public Health Honor Society and has graduated from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute.
