UT Health San Antonio creates new program to enhance research and care for substance abuse

The Be Well Institute, a new initiative launched by UT Health San Antonio, is focused on addressing substance use and related disorders. The institute aims to lead transformational change in this field, with a goal of reducing stigma and supporting the recovery of patients. Treatment options include psychological therapies, social and peer support, lifestyle counseling, community outreach, and educational initiatives.

According to Texas Health Data from the Texas Department of State Health Services, Bexar County ranks among the top three counties for drug-poisoning related deaths in 2022. This underscores the urgent need for effective treatment and research in this area.

The Be Well Texas initiative is a key component of a comprehensive center that will utilize clinical and public health programs, education, and community engagement to tackle substance abuse issues. Founding Director Jennifer Potter stated that stakeholders from various sectors are encouraged to participate in this effort to enhance the lives of individuals and communities affected by substance use disorders.

The institute is supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network and receives federal funding. As such, it signifies a new era of collaboration in this field of research.
