Against Financial Challenges: The UNI Group’s Promising Increase in Sales and Expansion Plans

Unimarkt branches transitioning into franchises

Despite facing challenges in the financial year 2023/24, The UNI Group, consisting of Unimarkt Handelsgesellschaft, UNIWholesale, and UNILogistik, achieved total sales of around 474 million euros. This shows a promising increase from the previous year.

All Unimarkt branches are set to be converted into franchises by 2024/25, with 65 out of 124 locations already being managed by franchise partners. However, this transition comes with challenges as some online shops within the group were not profitable and had to be closed. Additionally, following a ruling by the Constitutional Court regarding opening times, the 17 locations in UNIBox are facing changes in their schedules and operations.

The concept of autonomous UNIBoxes did not prove to be successful, resulting in their closure due to lack of profitability. However, the know-how gained from this venture will be utilized in Nah&Frisch hybrid markets within the group. With a total of 23 Nah&Frisch hybrid locations at the end of the financial year, an expansion plan for 16 more locations is in place for the upcoming year.

Unimarkt now also operates two hybrid locations and sees this concept as the future of its operations amidst challenges in finding employees. The group consists of UNIWholesale, UNILogistik, Unimarkt Handels GmbH, and 50% ownership of the convenience supplier unik, which achieved sales of 87 million euros in the previous financial year. With around 3,100 employees
