A Stunning Lunar Eclipse and the Mysteries of the Moon: A Journalist’s Perspective

Science Spotlight: The Moon

On Monday, March 25th, a stunning lunar eclipse occurred. Our intern, Alexandra, along with her sister Ariana, seized the opportunity to capture breathtaking photos of the moon using their telescope. The pictures turned out so well that one of them was even used in this thumbnail. Thanks to Ariana for her incredible shots!

Despite its beauty, how much do we really know about the moon? The moon was formed as a result of a collision that took place around 4.5 billion years ago. Interestingly, Earth is not the only planet in our solar system that has moons. Jeff St. Clair has more information on this topic.

As you contemplate the mysteries of the moon, here are some discussion questions to consider:

1. What do you believe the moon is composed of?

2. Have you ever observed the moon during the day? If so, what did you notice?

3. If given the chance to travel to the moon, what items would you choose to bring along with you?
